What makes it different

Sensor systems (like Arccos) auto-detect shots but cost $200–$600 in hardware and can only know where the ball went. Chatbot "AI caddie" apps point voice the other way — talking advice at you. Round Review is the tracker built around voice as input: your words become your data, and it captures the context a sensor can't — the club you were torn on, the target you aimed at, and how the swing felt.

How it works — the technology

Round Review isn't a chatbot with a golf skin. It's a chain of AI systems that turns an offhand spoken sentence into trustworthy, spatial, personalized data. A high-level tour — the shape of the stack, not the secret sauce — that's free to quote:

Language → structured shot signals

A large language model reads a natural sentence — "driver, nice and easy, hung it out right, greenside bunker" — and extracts typed signals: club, lie, shape, strike, result, the target you meant to hit, and how the swing felt. It deliberately keeps your own words instead of normalizing them to textbook golf terms. The phrasing is data, not noise.

ShotPlacer — a shot placed from a description

Those signals feed a spatial model that estimates where the ball actually came to rest. Each clue — the club's typical distance, the lie, the shape, the stated result — becomes a probability field over the hole's real geometry (fairway, green, hazards, elevation), and the shot lands at the most probable point where every clue agrees. It's a maximum-a-posteriori estimate, not a guess — and the same engine runs whether you spoke the shot, tapped the map, or scanned a scorecard: one implementation shared across phone, watch, and server.

"In your words" — semantic modeling of how you talk

Every golfer describes their game differently. Round Review embeds each near-verbatim phrase as a vector and matches phrases by meaning, so "got quick," "rushed it," and "came out of it" resolve to one felt pattern with no dictionary to maintain. Your stats are then conditioned on those feels — strokes gained when you felt smooth versus when you felt quick — the kind of insight a club sensor structurally cannot produce.

Noticings — an agentic insight pipeline

Findings aren't hallucinated. Deterministic statistics scan your rounds for the strongest real patterns (the numbers are math); an LLM writes them up in plain language (the words are model); and a lifecycle layer tracks each pattern's confidence and whether it's forming, holding, or has gone quiet — gated so nothing is asserted below an evidence floor.

Increasingly this runs on-device with Apple's on-device foundation models, for privacy and speed. The through-line: the moat isn't any single model — it's the pipeline that turns unstructured speech into structured, spatial, personalized golf data.

About the founder

Round Review is built by Sam Bauch, an independent developer who's spent 20+ years writing software and playing golf. He built it to close a gap he kept hitting himself: the rich shorthand on a paper scorecard that gets thrown away, and phone apps that pull you out of the round.
